Every ECU, remap, and file-service term โ€” explained in plain English.

A

A2L File

File Modification

Calibration description file used with INCA/CANape to map ECU memory addresses to readable parameter names.

Acceleration Enrichment

Tuning Concepts

Extra fuel added during sudden throttle input to prevent a lean stumble.

Active Cylinder Management (ACM/AFM/MDS)

Comfort

Manufacturer cylinder-deactivation system. Often disabled in software to prevent lifter failure or NVH issues.

AdBlue (DEF)

Emissions

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (urea solution) sprayed into the exhaust to neutralise NOx in SCR systems. AdBlue Off removes the requirement and warnings โ€” illegal for road use in the UK.

AFR (Air-Fuel Ratio)

Tuning Concepts

Mass ratio of air to fuel in the combustion chamber. Stoichiometric is 14.7:1 for petrol; tuners target richer ratios (~12.5:1) under boost for safety and power.

AGR Off

Emissions

German term for EGR Off โ€” disables Exhaust Gas Recirculation in the ECU file.

Anti-Lag (ALS)

Performance

Keeps the turbo spooled between gear changes by retarding ignition and adding fuel โ€” common in motorsport, harsh on hardware.

Anti-Theft / IMMO Bypass

Diagnostics

Removes immobiliser checks so a virgin or donor ECU starts without the original key data.

ASR / Traction Off

Performance

Disables anti-slip regulation in the ECU for track use or dyno work.

Autotuner

Tools

Modern slave/master ECU programming tool supporting OBD, bench and boot reading on a wide range of ECUs.

Backup File

File Modification

A verified copy of the original ECU read, stored before any modification โ€” your safety net for revert.

Base Map

Tuning Concepts

The starting calibration a tuner edits โ€” typically the OE stock file or a known-good donor file.

BDM (Background Debug Mode)

Reading Methods

Low-level processor access used to read/write ECUs that don't support OBD or boot mode. Requires bench work.

Bench Mode

Reading Methods

Reading or writing an ECU on the bench (out of the vehicle) via direct pin connections. Used when OBD isn't supported.

BHP / WHP

Tuning Concepts

Brake Horsepower (at the flywheel) vs Wheel Horsepower (at the wheels). Drivetrain loss is typically 15โ€“25%.

Boost Leak

Diagnostics

Loss of pressure in the charge-air system. Causes underboost codes and limp mode โ€” must be fixed before tuning.

Boost Pressure

Tuning Concepts

Positive intake manifold pressure created by a turbo or supercharger. Measured in bar/psi. Increased carefully during tuning.

Boot Mode

Reading Methods

Forcing the ECU's processor into bootloader mode for low-level read/write access. Requires opening the ECU.

Burble Tune

Sound Mods

Lighter version of Pop & Bang โ€” adds gentle exhaust crackle on lift-off without aggressive bangs.

C

Calibration

Tuning Concepts

The set of values inside an ECU that control fuelling, timing, boost, etc. Tuning = modifying these values.

CAN Bus

Hardware

Controller Area Network โ€” the communication backbone between ECU, TCU, ABS, dash and other modules.

Cat-Back / Decat

Sound Mods

Hardware exhaust mods. Often paired with Pop & Bang or Stage 2 software changes.

Charge Pressure

Tuning Concepts

Another term for boost pressure โ€” the air pressure delivered by turbo/supercharger to the intake.

Checksum

File Modification

Mathematical signature inside an ECU file. Must be recalculated after edits or the ECU rejects the file. Tools handle this automatically.

Closed Loop / Open Loop

Tuning Concepts

Closed loop uses lambda sensor feedback for fuelling; open loop runs preset fuel maps (typically under boost/WOT).

Cold Start Delete

Disables the higher-RPM cold-start cycle that catalysts need to warm up. Removes morning noise restriction.

Crackle Map

Calibration zone tuned to inject fuel during overrun for the popping/banging exhaust effect (see Pop & Bang).

Damos File

File Modification

Map definition file used in WinOLS to identify and label maps inside an ECU binary.

Datalogging

Diagnostics

Recording live ECU parameters (boost, AFR, timing, knock) during driving to validate a tune.

DDE (Digital Diesel Electronics)

Hardware

BMW's diesel ECU family โ€” common targets for Stage 1, DPF/EGR and DTC work.

Donor File

File Modification

A known-good file from another vehicle of the same spec, used when an original read isn't available.

DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)

Emissions

Filters soot from diesel exhaust. DPF Off (delete) removes the regen logic โ€” illegal for UK road use, MOT failure.

DPF Regen

Emissions

Active regeneration cycle that burns soot trapped in the DPF. Failed regens lead to blocked filters and limp mode.

Drive-by-Wire (DBW)

Hardware

Electronic throttle control โ€” no cable. Pedal position is interpreted by the ECU via the throttle map.

DSG / TCU Tuning

Gearbox

Calibration of the dual-clutch (DSG) or auto transmission ECU โ€” raises torque limits, faster shifts, launch control.

DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code)

Diagnostics

Fault code stored by an ECU. DTC Removal disables a specific code permanently in the file.

E

E85 / Flex Fuel Tune

Tune Types

Calibration for high-ethanol fuel โ€” more power thanks to the cooling effect and higher octane, but needs more fuel volume.

Eco / Economy Tune

Tune Types

File optimised for fuel economy at typical cruise loads โ€” small power gains, focus on lower BSFC.

ECU (Engine Control Unit)

Hardware

Computer that manages engine operation. The primary target of remapping.

ECU Clone

File Modification

Writing a complete ECU image (incl. EEPROM and immo data) into a donor unit so it behaves like the original.

EDC15 / EDC16 / EDC17

Hardware

Generations of Bosch diesel ECUs. EDC17 is the most common modern platform across VAG, BMW, Ford, Vauxhall etc.

EDC17 / MED17 / MEDC17

Hardware

Bosch ECU families used across VAG, BMW, Mercedes etc. โ€” most common platforms for diesel/petrol tuning.

EEPROM

Hardware

Small non-volatile memory chip inside an ECU storing immo data, mileage, adaptations.

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)

Emissions

Recirculates exhaust into the intake to lower NOx. EGR Off disables it in software โ€” illegal for road use.

EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature)

Tuning Concepts

Heat at the exhaust manifold. Critical limit when increasing fuelling โ€” protects turbo & valves.

EVAP / Tank Vent Delete

Emissions

Disables fuel vapour recovery system codes. Common after exhaust/intake mods.

Exhaust Brake

Comfort

Engine braking aid on diesel/commercial vehicles. Sometimes adjusted in TCU/ECU files.

F

Fault Code Clear

Diagnostics

Erasing stored DTCs after a repair or DTC removal in software. Codes return if the underlying fault remains.

Flap Motor / Swirl Flap Delete

Diagnostics

Software fix for failed intake swirl flap actuators โ€” disables related fault codes.

FlexECU / FlexTune

Tools

Aftermarket reflashable ECU solutions (e.g. Magneti Marelli FlexECU on Alfa/Abarth).

Full Read / Full Write

Reading Methods

Reading or writing the entire ECU memory (vs partial calibration-only) โ€” required for major map changes.

G

Gearbox Limit Removal

Gearbox

Raises the factory torque ceiling in the TCU so it doesn't pull engine torque after an ECU tune.

H

Hard Cut Limiter

Performance

Aggressive RPM limiter that cuts fuel/spark suddenly โ€” also used for launch control & pops.

Hardware Repair File

File Modification

A corrected or rebuilt ECU file used to recover a bricked, corrupted, or partially-read unit.

Hex / Bin File

File Modification

Raw binary representation of an ECU's flash memory โ€” the file tuners actually edit.

High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP)

Hardware

Direct-injection fuel pump. Tuners must respect HPFP limits when raising fuelling demand.

Hot Start Fix

Diagnostics

Calibration adjustment to resolve hard hot-restart issues, often common on certain diesel platforms.

I

Idle Tune

Comfort

Adjusts target idle RPM and stability โ€” useful after cams, intake or exhaust changes.

Immo Off

Diagnostics

Disables the factory immobiliser in the ECU file โ€” used when fitting a donor ECU without the matching key.

Injector Scaling

Tuning Concepts

Recalibrating fuelling maps for larger or smaller aftermarket injectors.

JTAG

Reading Methods

Industry-standard debug interface used to read/write certain ECUs at the processor level.

K

Knock Control

Tuning Concepts

ECU strategy that retards timing when detonation is detected. Tuners must respect knock margins to keep engines safe.

Knock Sensor

Hardware

Microphone-like sensor detecting detonation. Feedback drives the knock control strategy.

L

Lambda (ฮป)

Tuning Concepts

Air-fuel ratio expressed relative to stoichiometric. ฮป=1 is stoich; ฮป<1 is rich, ฮป>1 is lean.

Lambda Sensor (O2 Sensor)

Hardware

Measures exhaust oxygen โ€” gives the ECU AFR feedback. Front (control) and rear (cat monitor) sensors.

Launch Control

Performance

Holds revs at a set RPM with anti-lag/clutch logic for consistent standing-start launches.

Limp Mode

Diagnostics

Reduced-power safe mode triggered by faults (boost, MAF, knock). Fix the cause before tuning.

M

MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor)

Hardware

Measures air mass entering the engine. MAF Off / MAF Delete moves the engine to MAP-based control after sensor failure or intake mods.

MAGPro2 / MagicMotorsport

Tools

Italian-made bench/boot/OBD tuning tool family โ€” popular for hard-to-reach ECUs.

MAP Sensor

Hardware

Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor โ€” measures intake pressure. Critical for boost control and load calculation.

Map Switching

Tune Types

Multiple selectable calibrations in one file (eco/sport/race) toggled via cruise stalk, OBD switch, or aftermarket controller.

MED / MEVD / MG1 / MD1

Hardware

Bosch petrol ECU families. MG1/MD1 are the latest TC298-based generation found on modern VAG, BMW, Mercedes.

Methanol / Water-Methanol Injection

Performance

Sprays a water/methanol mix into the intake to cool charge air and add octane. Requires custom fuel/ignition maps.

MPPS

Tools

Budget OBD tuning tool โ€” commonly used on older EDC15/16/17 platforms.

N

NOx Sensor / NOx Off

Emissions

Sensor monitoring NOx output for SCR/AdBlue systems. NOx Off disables related codes (illegal for road use).

O

OBD (On-Board Diagnostics)

Reading Methods

Standard 16-pin port for diagnostics and ECU programming on most modern vehicles.

Octane / RON

Tuning Concepts

Fuel knock resistance rating. 95 RON minimum for most tunes; 98/99 RON recommended for Stage 2+.

Original / Stock File

File Modification

The unmodified factory calibration. Always backed up before any changes.

Overboost

Tuning Concepts

Brief boost spike above target โ€” used factory for transient torque, must be controlled when tuning.

Overrun

Sound Mods

Engine state when the throttle is closed but RPM is high (lift-off/downshift). Where pops & bangs happen.

P

Particulate Number (PN) Sensor

Emissions

Newer Euro 6d sensor measuring soot count downstream of DPF. Must be addressed when modifying exhaust.

PCMtuner

Tools

Multi-protocol ECU programming tool supporting OBD, bench, and boot operations.

Pedalbox

Hardware

Plug-in module that alters throttle-pedal voltage signal โ€” sharpens response without remapping. Often combined with a tune.

Performance Tune

Tune Types

Calibration focused on maximum safe power & torque on the given hardware.

Pop & Bang

Sound Mods

Tune that injects unburnt fuel into the exhaust on overrun, igniting in the cat/exhaust for crackles and bangs. Best with sports cat or decat.

Power & Torque Curve

Graph of crank power and torque vs RPM. The shape matters as much as the peak number.

R

Rail Pressure

Tuning Concepts

Common-rail diesel fuel pressure (often 1500โ€“2500 bar). Raised carefully for more fuelling.

Recovery File

File Modification

A clean file used to bring back a bricked ECU after a failed write.

Remap / Chip Tune

Tune Types

Modification of the ECU's calibration to alter performance, economy, or behaviour.

Revision (Tune Revision)

File Modification

An updated version of a delivered file โ€” fault-code fix, drivability tweak, or modification update.

Rolling Road / Dyno

Diagnostics

Chassis dynamometer used to measure power at the wheels and validate tunes safely under load.

RPM Limiter (Soft / Hard)

Performance

Soft cut gradually pulls fuel/spark; hard cut chops abruptly. Both can be raised within mechanical limits.

S

SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)

Emissions

Emissions system using AdBlue to reduce NOx. Targeted by AdBlue Off requests (illegal for road use).

Sensor Off

Diagnostics

Disables a specific sensor's monitoring in the ECU after the sensor has failed or been removed.

Shift Map

Gearbox

TCU table defining when the gearbox upshifts/downshifts based on load, speed, throttle.

Shift Pressure / Shift Time

Gearbox

TCU values controlling clutch pressure and shift speed โ€” tuned for sharper, faster gearchanges.

Smoke Limiter

Tuning Concepts

Diesel fuelling cap that prevents visible black smoke. Adjusted carefully when raising fuelling for power.

Speed Density

Tuning Concepts

Load calculation method using MAP + IAT + RPM instead of MAF airflow. Used after MAF deletes or large mods.

Speed Limiter Removal

Performance

Removes or raises the factory top-speed limiter. See VMAX.

Stage 1

Tune Types

Software-only remap on a stock vehicle. Typical gains: +20โ€“30% torque, +15โ€“25% power. Safe on factory hardware.

Stage 1+

Tune Types

Mild Stage 2 โ€” typically with just a sports cat or downpipe added on top of a Stage 1 base.

Stage 2

Tune Types

Software remap supported by hardware mods โ€” sports cat, intake, intercooler, downpipe. Bigger gains than Stage 1.

Stage 3

Tune Types

Major hardware build (hybrid/big turbo, injectors, fuelling, methanol/E85) with bespoke calibration. Track-focused.

Start-Stop Disable

Comfort

Permanently disables the auto start-stop system in the ECU.

Static Timing / Ignition Advance

Tuning Concepts

How far before TDC the spark fires. More advance = more power, but risks knock.

Stock Recovery

File Modification

Reverting an ECU to its original factory file using the stored backup.

Stoichiometric

Tuning Concepts

Chemically perfect AFR (14.7:1 for petrol) where all fuel and oxygen react. Cruise and emissions targets sit here.

Swirl Flap

Hardware

Intake-manifold flaps that improve low-RPM combustion. Failure-prone on some BMW/VAG diesels โ€” often deleted in software.

Swirl Flap Off

Diagnostics

Disables intake swirl-flap monitoring after the actuator fails โ€” prevents repeated fault codes.

T

TCU (Transmission Control Unit)

Gearbox

Computer controlling the gearbox. Tuned for higher torque limits, faster shifts, and modified shift maps.

Throttle Map

Comfort

ECU table mapping pedal position to commanded throttle/torque. Tuned for sharper or smoother response.

Throttle Response Tune

Comfort

Softens or sharpens the pedal map for snappier or smoother throttle behaviour.

Torque Limiter

Tuning Concepts

Software ceiling on engine torque โ€” raised carefully during tuning to allow gains without TCU pull-back.

Torque Monitoring / Torque Model

Tuning Concepts

Modern ECUs calculate desired vs actual torque. Edits must keep these models consistent or the ECU triggers limp.

Turbo Hybrid

Performance

U

Underboost / Overboost Code

Diagnostics

ECU faults raised when measured boost differs too far from target. Common after leaks or aggressive tunes.

V

VAG

Hardware

Volkswagen Audi Group โ€” VW, Audi, SEAT, ล koda, Cupra, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini.

Vehicle Speed Limiter

Performance

Software cap on top speed (typically 155 mph / 250 km/h). Removed via VMAX.

Virtual Read

Reading Methods

Generating an ECU file from manufacturer/version data when a physical read isn't possible. Always verified before write.

VMAX (Top Speed Removal)

Performance

Removes the factory speed limiter so the vehicle can run to its mechanical limit. Track-use only.

VVT / VANOS

Hardware

Variable Valve Timing systems (Toyota VVT-i, BMW VANOS, etc.) โ€” calibrated to optimise breathing across the rev range.

W

WinOLS

EVC's industry-standard map editor used by professional file editors to identify and modify ECU maps.

Winter / Valet Mode

Comfort

Soft secondary calibration to limit power for low-grip conditions or vehicle handover.

WOT (Wide Open Throttle)
